YACHTING WORLD - APRIL, 2001.

N.B. - Errata.

Whilst Race1 was grateful to David Glenn and Yachting World for writing a page of editorial about the Ker 11.3, there was a major concern that the quote that it will be “Faster than all existing 40’s” was not something that Race1 or Ker Associates claimed. What has been indicated by analysis is that despite being less than 38ft the Race1 Ker 11.3 IRM One-Design will be competitive with the current 41ft One -Designs currently racing in the U.K. (Full article reproduced below).

NEW KER ONE-DESIGN "FASTER THAN ALL EXISTING 40'S".

This Jason Ker-designed 11.3m IRM grand prix one-design is due to launch in time for the busy summer racing season. In fact, the boat will be known as the Race1 Ker 11.3 because marketing organisation Race1 will offer schemes to the first owners to manage and commercialise their yachts to help reduce costs. Financing for up to 80 per cent of the purchase price will be available. The offer will be made in conjunction with Ker Associates Ltd.

Ker's track record is impressive, with boats like Roaring Meg, Shakermaker II and Quokka V turning heads last year, especially in the Commodores’ Cup.The 11.3 is a third generation 38ft IRM yacht which will also be competitive under IRC. The aim is to make it a successful one-design,with a full racing circuit, so it will become a serious challenge for future Admiral's Cup selection.

Roaring Meg, at 10.7m, was fast enough to finish among the 40-footers on the water in the Commodores' Cup but polar predictions for the 11.3 indicate that she could be two per cent faster than Meg and will exceed the performance of all existing 40ft one-designs - quite a claim!

Race1 and Ker Associates say: "The 11.3 will have a double-spreader carbon mast with a 15/16ths rig, norunners, nonoverlapping headsails and masthead spinnakers. Other features include a removable keel with a maintenance-free hull to keel join, choice of wheel or tiller steering and an unconventional interior, utilising high-tech materials, optimised for offshore as well as inshore racing."
