"Day 7 Review"
- Edward Gorman. (The Times) Saturday 11 August, 2001.
In Class 1, the fleet was sent on a long light airs beat against the tide right out to the Bridge buoy beyond the Needles Channel. Then it was a long run back down the Solent before a building breeze, again into a foul tide.
After her three wins in a row in strong weather, Richard Loftus's old Swan 65, Desperado of Cowes, could finish only eleventh, while the top two places went to the new Ker-designed 11.3 metre one-designs, I-Site, owned by Robbie Cameron-Davies and Michael White's On A High. Third was Jim Richardson's American crew on the Farr 40, Barking Mad.
"Desperado got glued in and swept out of it in the current, which everybody was delighted about because it keeps the class alive into the last day," Phil "Porky" Lawrence, a crew member on board Charles Dunstone's Corby 41.5, Nokia, which was fourth, said. Nokia, now goes into the shoot-off for overall honours today against the Swan, On A High and the First 47.7, Team Tonic, which is steered by Jeremy Robinson.
Like many others in the fleet, Lawrence was impressed by the turn of speed on show from the Kers as they ripped down the Solent to the finish. "I-Site and On A High came from way back - probably three-quarters of a mile behind us and past us at the finish," Lawrence said.
