V8 Sportsboat - How Fast |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The key factors which make a boat quick are Sail Plan, Hull Length & Weight. With the initial plans for the hull, Race1 set about making the boat quicker still. Race1 enlisted the help of Ker Associates to help refine the design. We looked at the three main target areas where performance gains can be made.
At 27' 6" the V8 has got plenty of waterline length to give her the capability of going faster than any other sportsboat currently on the market. Extensive research has been made into the Sailplan for the boat. Rig choice is essential for boats of any size, so as to obtain the correct bend characteristics to suit the boat. We feel that we have chosen a mast that will be very light as well as durable but will perform well throughout the wind range. The twin spreader mast is no less than 12m long and is deck stepped. The hull of the boat will weigh in at around 300kg the bulb keel will then add a further 700kg to this. This gives a ballast ratio of about 55% once you include the deck hardware and an outboard engine. The overall displacement is 1350kg.
The V8's predicted performance deltas were compared to that of the Race1 Ker 11.3. A Mumm 30/Farr 40 comparison was then taken from the Farr website. With the 11.3 and the Farr 40 taken to be similar, the following deltas are expected for a V8/Mumm 30 comparison
